Privacy & your family's data

Walt exists to keep your family's memories safe for generations. Here is exactly where they live and who touches them.

Where your memories live

Your family's primary storage is located in Canada — stories, transcripts, photos and voice notes live in a database and private storage that only your family can access. Access is enforced row by row: even inside Walt, one family can never see another's data. Some features use additional providers that may process data in other regions: videos are stored and delivered by Cloudflare Stream over its global network, and a few trusted specialists process data in the United States — all listed on our Sub-processors page.

What happens to a photo or recording

Photos are resized on your own device and location data (EXIF/GPS) is stripped before they ever leave it. Voice and video upload directly to secure storage — media never passes through our web servers. Playback links are private and expire.

How AI touches your memories

AI transcribes your recordings (keeping the original language), gathers the people, places and traditions you mention, and writes the weekly story. Your data is never used to train AI models. Photo people-suggestions come from context — who uploaded it, what the caption says — never from facial recognition, which Walt does not use and will never use.

Sub-processors

These are the only companies that process your family's data, and what each one sees:

Your rights

Export your family's entire archive, correct anything, or delete everything permanently — any time, without asking twice. Children under 16 participate only through invitations controlled by their own family.
