Terms of use
The agreement between Walt and your family — written to be read, not skimmed past. Effective July 11, 2026.
Plain-language summary (non-binding)
This summary is provided for readability and is not part of the binding Terms of Use. If it appears to conflict with the numbered sections below, the numbered sections govern.
Walt is a private space where your family answers questions and Walt weaves the answers into stories and a living family archive. One membership covers your whole family for $199 a year, after a 60-day free trial. Where a founding-family promotion code is applied at checkout, your first year is $0 — set up through a real checkout so there are no surprises — and we will always tell you clearly, well in advance, before anything starts costing money. Everything your family shares belongs to your family; we never sell it, never use it for advertising, and never use it to train AI models. You can cancel anytime and leave with a full export. Walt is provided “as is”, and our liability is limited — but nothing in these Terms takes away consumer-protection rights you have under Canadian law (including Québec) that cannot be waived.
1. Definitions
For the purposes of these Terms of Use:
1.1 “Walt”, “we”, “us”, “our” means the operator of the Walt service, established in and operated from Ontario, Canada.
1.2 “Terms” means these Terms of Use, as amended from time to time in accordance with Section 8.
1.3 “Service” means the Walt application and website and the features Walt makes available through them.
1.4 “Member” means an individual who holds an account within a family; “Family Historian” means the Member who administers a family's membership.
1.5 “Membership” means the single subscription that entitles one family — every invited Member, across countries and generations — to use the Service.
1.6 “Family Content” means the memories a family chooses to share — voice recordings, videos, photographs, and written answers — together with what Walt derives from them (transcripts, translations, the Family Graph, and the weekly stories).
1.7 “Personal Information”, “Sub-Processor”, and “Process” / “Processing” have the meanings given to them in the Privacy Policy.
2. Agreement to these Terms
2.1 These Terms form a binding agreement between the Member and Walt governing the Member's use of the Service. By creating a family, accepting a Membership invitation, or otherwise using the Service, the Member agrees to these Terms.
2.2 These Terms are drafted to be read. A Member who does not understand any provision may write to hello@walt.family, and Walt will explain it in plain language.
3. Membership and eligibility
3.1 A single Membership covers one family, including every invited Member, across countries and generations.
3.2 The price of a Membership is the standard annual price (currently $199 per year), following a 60-day free trial. Where a promotional code has been applied at checkout — as with the founding-family codes that waive the first year — the first year is $0, after which the Membership renews at the standard annual price. The Membership is established through an actual checkout so that later billing arrangements are transparent from the outset. Walt will notify Members clearly and well in advance before any charge takes effect.
3.3 An individual must be an adult to create a family or accept a Membership. A Member under 16 years of age joins only where a parent or guardian within the family invites that Member and consents on their behalf, as further described in the Privacy Policy.
4. Ownership of Family Content and licence to operate the Service
4.1 Family Content — recordings, photographs, videos, written memories, and the stories Walt generates from them — belongs to the family that shares it. Walt claims no ownership of Family Content.
4.2 In order to provide the Service, the Member grants Walt a limited licence to store, transcribe, translate, and otherwise Process Family Content solely to provide the Service to that Member's family. That licence ends when the Family Content is deleted or the family leaves the Service.
4.3 Walt does not use Family Content for advertising, does not sell Family Content, and does not use Family Content to train artificial-intelligence models.
5. Acceptable use
5.1 A Member shall share only content the Member has the right to share, and shall be honest about the individuals depicted in a photograph or described in a memory.
5.2 A Member shall not upload content that is unlawful, hateful, or intended to harm any person, whether inside or outside the Member's family, and shall not attempt to access another family's private space or probe the Service for vulnerabilities. A Member who discovers a vulnerability inadvertently is asked to report it to hello@walt.family.
5.3 The Family Historian determines who joins the family space. Joining a family means that the other Members of that family can see the Family Content shared into it.
6. Artificial-intelligence features
6.1 Walt uses artificial-intelligence services to transcribe recordings, identify the people and places referred to in memories, and draft the weekly story. Artificial intelligence is imperfect; for that reason each weekly story is reviewed before the family sees it, and anything Walt generates incorrectly may be corrected or removed.
6.2 Walt does not use facial recognition or any other biometric identification. Further detail on Walt's AI Processing is set out in the Privacy Policy.
7. Cancellation, export, and deletion
7.1 A Member may cancel a Membership at any time, without a telephone call or a retention offer.
7.2 On cancellation, Walt provides an export of the family's stories and media and deletes the family's Personal Information from live systems within 30 days; backup copies age out within a further 35 days.
7.3 An individual Member may leave a family and request deletion of that Member's own contributions, as further described in the Privacy Policy.
8. Changes to these Terms
8.1 If Walt changes these Terms in a way that materially affects Members, Walt will notify every adult Member and provide time to review the changes before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the amended Terms; a Member who does not accept them may leave the Service and obtain a full export.
9. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
9.1 Walt works to keep the Service available and each family's archive secure, and describes how in the Privacy Policy. However, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. Walt does not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, and Members acknowledge that, particularly during its early operation, the Service may occasionally be imperfect.
9.2 To the extent permitted by law, Walt's total liability to a Member is limited to the amount the Member's family paid to Walt in the twelve (12) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.
9.3 Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes any right a Member has under consumer-protection law in Canada, including Québec, that cannot be limited or excluded by contract.
10. Governing law
10.1 These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.
10.2 Where a Member resides elsewhere (Walt families frequently span Canada, India, and the United Kingdom), the mandatory local consumer-protection rights of the Member's place of residence continue to apply.
11. Contact
11.1 Walt may be contacted at hello@walt.family. Walt responds as humans, usually within two business days.
